Last year my summer lacked that je ne sais quoi often associated with summer. True, they can’t all be winners, yet it was especially difficult with pregnancy, work, home renovations, extended family stresses, and missing several important events in Oregon due to reason #1. This year I am looking forward to making up for all of that with my Alaskan Summer To-Do List! We have a few outings planned but I am mostly excited for a more relaxed day-to-day experience without unwanted visitors and pregnancy hormones. This also most definitely includes adult beverages. Obviously. Alaska really can be lovely during the summer! Here is what I am hoping to accomplish throughout the next three months:
- Kick off the summer with a fun, big Memorial Day BBQ and break-in the new play set going in the backyard.
- Spend a long weekend in Homer playing on the spit, eating delicious food, and relaxing by a campfire after the kids go to bed.
- Learn how to fly-fish.
- Have Magnolia baptized.
- Travel to Oregon to see our favorites.
- Do all of the hiking I wasn’t up for last year.
- Break out our old Zoku to make homemade popsicles.
- Fly to a glacier. Land on the glacier. Walk on the glacier.
- Family bike rides to get ice cream as the girls ride in their carriage giggling.
- Feed a baby moose a bottle.
- Make s’mores in our new fire pit.
- “Master” landscape photography. Ha!
- Spend Independence Day weekend in Girdwood. Take the girls to a small town parade.
- Go blueberry picking in Arctic Valley.
- Welcome a new puppy into our home. Maybe. We still can’t decide!
- Eat all of the peaches.
- Spend afternoons watching the girls play outside and not care about the time/the mud.
- Install blackout shades in our room. It’s about time! (Current sunset: 11:06pm. Current sunrise: 4:40am.)
- Celebrate summer solstice.
- Eat dinner outside as often as possible.
- Visit the Kenai River on a sunny day for once!
- Visit Juneau (too ambitious?)
- Date my husband.
- Go to the farmers’ market on Saturdays.
- Celebrate Magnolia’s FIRST birthday (how is this possible?).
I’d love to know, what summer plans are you most excited for? And fellow Alaskans, what am I missing from my list? Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Your list sounds very similar to ours. Except the Memorial Day BBQ. It snuck up on us this year and we’ve weirdly found ourselves without plans haha! We might do another road trip to Valdez this summer. We went last year but the drive is so amazing it’s worth doing again.

Oh that sounds fun! We’ll have to look into a drive to Valdez. I hope you have a relaxing long weekend sans plans!:)
