Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. It was blissfully warm in Alaska, like really, so I enjoyed a lot of time outside. I am trying out my green thumb (which is essentially nonexistent) and hoping the flowers I planted survive until the fall. Fingers crossed!
So, back to Germany! After exploring my friend’s tiny village while fighting jet lag, we ventured to bigger cities once we’d caught up on a little sleep. We first went to Erlangen, Germany which is simply adorable. My friend lived there for two weeks when they first arrived in Germany and said she’d never even seen the quaint and perfectly German streets we were walking around. It just goes to show you never know what you’re going to find when exploring! We caught the beginning of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih, a biergarten (beer garden), which is apparently a pretty big deal there. It’s older than the Oktoberfest festival in Munich! The most fascinating fact is that it takes place on the side of a mountain because that is where beer used to be kept prior to refrigeration to keep it cool. My favorite part was the little grandmas that were knocking back liters of beer at 11:00am with a side of bratwurst and sauerkraut. I mean, why not? We enjoyed a bratwurst the size of my head as well.
Then we got completely rained out and I hid my camera like a precious gremlin that would surely turn evil if wet. We had to go pick up our rental car anyway, which was the scariest/best thing we could have ever done there. Nate did claim at one point that he “was born to drive on the autobahn.” So, I’d say that was a success. Then we drove to Nuremberg, Germany. This was one of my favorite towns we went to (although I may say that about 90% of them). The old medieval architecture and traditional Bavarian design was so strikingly beautiful. Every corner brought us to a quaint little alley in pristine condition. I also love the juxtaposition between the old and new buildings that coexist rather seamlessly. My grandparents lived in Germany for several years in the 1940s and I think because of that I am quite taken with its history!
