People in the “lower 48” (that’s Alaska Speak for the rest of America) seem to be rather fascinated about what we do for fun … and especially raising a little one in The Last Frontier. I was the same way before we moved here. Just like living in any state, there are tons of cultural differences that impact our access to fun activities based on what is considered fun by people living here. For some reason, I cannot find a freaking playground with a swing set in Anchorage! What is that about! It’s certainly not my ideal place to live and raise Waverley, however we try to experience as much as we can while we’re here. Nate actually came up with the idea to have a “Growing Up Alaska” series that showcases the weekend activities we do with Waverley (how about him, huh!) because some activities are completely typical and others are absolutely not (he’s so excited to take her ice fishing this winter). This past weekend we went to a blueberry festival. It was similar to a festival you’d find anywhere, just blanketed in Alaska-ness: Reindeer hotdogs, clothes for the arctic, crazy expensive prices, horn decor, moose statues (naturally), and it was set in the midst of gigantic mountains with epically tall trees. At least there were delicious blueberry treats.
