I am excited to show you all Magnolia’s nursery today! This post has been a long time coming. These pictures were taken in February, after all! You may recall from here that I have been dreaming up her nursery for a while. We really got down to business last summer before she was born in order to have everything ready in time for her arrival– a stark contrast to Waverley’s nursery since we were moving across the country. We really haven’t made many changes to the room now since Magnolia came home (even the “Welcome Home, Magnolia” sign is still up) which is necessary for survival because I don’t think I could have handled a project like that in the past eight months.

Designing a nursery is really about maximizing function and cultivating a calm space. Obviously Magnolia could not care less what her room looks like, but I wanted the space to be serene, feminine, and useful. We turned Waverley’s nursery into Magnolia’s nursery with just a few changes and the room suddenly looks completely different. I was very concerned with creating a neutral nursery when Waverley was a baby and this time I wanted a more feminine touch. I’ve learned to embrace having two girls now!

We replaced all of the floors in our house last summer and taking out the carpet made a big difference in every room. We repainted the entire room white and installed a wall of statement wallpaper. We kept the dresser/changing table and some of the accessories from Waverley’s nursery, like the animal prints and shelves, since she transitioned into a big girl room. A new aspect when creating Magnolia’s nursery that I hadn’t considered before was a place for Waverley to play/sit when Magnolia is breastfeeding. We put Waverley’s lounge chair in the corner and it worked out perfectly! She loves to sit there and “breastfeed” her baby while I feed Magnolia. I die a little every time. I’m telling you, it never gets old:)

I fell in love with the wallpaper and knew I wanted to make that the focal point of the room. It makes such a statement that the room needs little else to feel special. We redid Waverley’s mobile (go here for the how-to) with new colors to match Magnolia’s room because the mobile became quite sentimental to us. Now I love listening to her sing after naps as she watches the mobile poms twirl. We also installed a new closet system, which has made such a difference in useful space and helps keep all of the baby paraphernalia organized. We also keep a drawer of toys for Waverley in Magnolia’s closet, otherwise she is constantly going in and out making all sorts of racket while I am trying to put Magnolia to sleep.

One of my favorite things about the room is how cozy it feels. There is enough room for all of us to play on the (super soft) rug and we often get both of the girls ready for bedtime in there. It is always a big family affair! The special objects on her shelf are fun to have on display and keep out the girls’ reach. The cross was her godmother’s given to her on her baptism, so it is extra special to have it. Her auntie found the antique bronze baby shoes years ago and held onto them for her own daughter, however ended up having all boys so gave them to Magnolia when she was born. And the girl has her first piece from Tiffany & Co (a crystal heart from her grandmother) on that shelf, too. What a lucky gal! I framed her birth announcement (which I have yet to post on, yikes!) because they turned out so beautiful.

I’m really in love with the oval crib, which I feel gives a modern and sleek vibe to an otherwise traditional nursery. I love how it contrasts with the white walls and gray floors. We are also very happy with the rocking chair, which doesn’t scream “baby nursery!” so we have moved it throughout the house and it suits every room perfectly. I like the modern aesthetic the rocker also brings to the room. Naturally I have spent many, many hours rocking Magnolia in this room and I always feel peaceful and calm when looking at the decor. She may never remember it but I know that in later years I’ll catch one glimpse of a blue peony and automatically be taken back to her first year and feel a sharp pang of nostalgia.
