What seemed like yesterday but was actually a few months ago, Nate, Waverley, Howie, and I traipsed up mountains and into the forest for a magical photo session. I was really excited about documenting this pregnancy as I knew from the start it was likely my last and I felt much more comfortable in my own (albeit very stretched out) skin than with my first pregnancy. Similar to my maternity photos when I was pregnant with Waverley, I wanted to capitalize on the place we live in. Fortunately, summer in Alaska offers a truly stunning setting which set the tone for our pictures.
This summer in Alaska provided the perfect backdrop to capture this time in our lives while we awaited Magnolia and celebrated Waverley. As a family we are always on the lookout for adventure therefore wanted to showcase this in our maternity family photos. Since Nate is an avid hunter and fisherman he’s always up for a challenge– and carrying a toddler up cliffs and over rocky terrain certainly was that! Hiking to the top of a cliff for some of the shots was an adventure and challenging for this (at the time) 34 week pregnant mama, too! And, if you can believe, these pictures were taken between 8:30pm and 11:00pm– we definitely have to stay up late to catch golden hour here in the summer! I wanted to take full advantage of the occasion so Waverley and I wore flower crowns and pretended we were magical fairies in the forest. There is nothing she loves more than water so we knew hiking into a waterfall would be perfect to represent our family as one of the locations. Plus, the deep forest environment makes me feel at home as if we’re exploring in Oregon.
I am so pleased with how these turned out and look forward to sharing them with the girls when they are older. We are fortunate to have such a fabulous photographer, Kristian Irey, who puts us at ease and makes photo sessions fun and easy. She is amazing at her craft!
