Hi! Today’s post is a little different, but I am oh-so-excited to introduce a new series I am starting on Instagram. Every Wednesday (assuming/hoping enough people want to participate!) I will share a picture of a kiddo with a disability in hopes of spreading disability awareness as well as just showing off cute kiddos. Because who can resist that? Basically, the goal is to show that kiddos who have disabilities are out doing most things that typically developing kiddos are doing, too- sometimes just with a few modifications! As an occupational therapist, I adore seeing pictures of children with disabilities having fun and living life to the fullest. It is what working in pediatrics is really all about: helping babes do everything they can in life, whether it is getting around easily, eating, dressing, or playing sports. A sweet picture of a little gal was recently shared on a famous Instagram account and while most of the comments were uplifting, some of them were infuriating. I could not believe the ignorance I was reading, so wanted to start something that promotes awareness and inclusion. #POASdisabilityawareness
I’d like to introduce the first Disability Awareness Wednesday kiddo (giddy, yay!)! This is Hadley! She is three years-old and has Angelman Syndrome. Hadley’s mom, Becky, says:
Hadley is our wonderful little light that brightens everyone’s day. She is so happy and kind. She teaches us what is important in life, especially how to love someone for who they are because who they are is perfect. Some of her favorite things: swimming, our dogs, the word (or action) “toot” which makes her cackle in hysteria, Grandpa, and dancing. Some of her challenges: language, sleeping, new situations/environments. Nick and I try to keep the mindset that Hadley will eventually do all things, but will do them in her own time. The biggest thing I am waiting for is to hear her say “mama.” Maybe one day 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing Hadley with us, Becky! She is such a sweet and beautiful girl! Also, the handmade swing she is lounging in can be found here. Isn’t it adorable?
So, start tagging your pictures on Instagram with #POASdisabilityawareness and spread the word to all the parents out there who work incredibly hard each day for their babes with extra needs. I hope this can be interesting and informative for everyone though! Thanks everyone!
