Spring is usually my favorite season. I love the newly blooming flowers, the novelty of long evening strolls and al fresco dining, the fresh fruits and vegetables, and the excitement of needing just a few less layers. I adore the warm days and still cool nights. I love the happy colors and cheeky decor. I look forward to the feeling of starting anew and making summer plans. I especially love the first iced latte of the season. The optimism is practically bursting from every living creature!
Spring in Alaska is different. Springtime here is reminiscent of wintertime in most places. It is brown, desolate, and halfway frozen. The ground is slushy and the gradual thawing of it results in an overwhelming smell filing the air, similar to moldy dog feces.
Warm jackets, hats, and boots are still required when going outside. There is always the possibility of snow (yesterday we got three inches!). I still crave warm, hearty, and extra fattening meals.
If you are fixing to visit Alaska, I highly recommend you avoid this time of year. On the bright side, we now have 14 hours of daylight per day. By June it will 20+ hours! #clingtoyouwhatyouhave
