There is always so much promise when starting a new novel. I love the smell of the pages (I don’t think I can trade that in for electronic versions), enjoying a break from reality, and with a very good book realizing that four hours just passed even though it felt like twenty minutes. Unfortunately, I have been in a reading rut lately. It seems every new book I pick out ends up being a dud and sits unfinished on my shelf, which is completely devastating. I am in desperate need for great recommendations to create my summer reading list. To get the book clubs rolling, here is a list of some of my favorite reads. (Please forgive the fact they are all fairly old. I wasn’t lying when I said I need some new recommendations.)
{The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls}
{The Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdez-Rodriguez}
{Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner}
{Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella}
{Gone to the Dogs by Mary Guterson}
{Q & A (i.e., Slumdog Millionaire) by Vikas Swarup}
{Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes}
{The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold}
{A Total Waste of Makeup by Kim Gruenenfelder}
It’s pretty obvious I prefer light-hearted reading material. Don’t judge! The sadness of my job can be all-consuming and a fun book helps me keep my sanity.

Hmm, lighthearted… I want to recommend Captain Corelli’s Mandolin quite badly – and it is a VERY funny book, but also in parts really sad… yeah, give it a try 🙂

I can handle some sad, just not allll sad and serious! I will definitely check this one out. Thank you so much!

I think after looking at your list I have some good recommendations for you. (I love the cover you chose for Glass Castle, gosh it’s gorgeous, I haven’t ever seen that one). You should definitely read Kate Morton (any of her books are a charm). Try Girls in Trucks by Katie Crouch, she also wrote Men and Dogs which is good, but not as good as Girls in Trucks. Read Summer Sisters by Judy Blume. Read Nikki Gemmel The Bride Stripped Bare. Read anything by Alice Hoffman, she’s amazing. Read Mennonite in a Little Black Dress (it blends memoir and chick-lit really well). I think that’s a good start. They’re all fun reads for summer.

I think you’ll like most of them – you’ll have to let me know if you do. : )
