Makeup or lack thereof is a delicate situation for healthcare practitioners. Wear too much and respect plummets if you look like you’re trying too hard (or going out clubbing) yet wear none at all and, well, what’s the point? We all know a little shimmer makes a gal feel good. A fellow therapist (who happens to be gorgeous) mentioned that in college she couldn’t decide between a career in fashion or healthcare. She chose healthcare and is now a physical therapist. See, girls can be smart and appreciate aesthetically pleasing external factors and have good hearts choosing to work with kiddos who have disabilities. Not sure who decided we had to be just one of the above.
So how much makeup is the appropriate amount to wear to work in a hospital? Well, let’s be realistic: It can’t take too long and can’t be too heavy (because sometimes we are known to break a sweat). Believe it or not, people have asked about my makeup routine at work so I have included the products I use each morning. I promise it does not take more than 12 minutes.
Starting from the top left:
Estée Lauder Idealist: For those of us with larger pores (thank you, mom, for both the pores and the obsession with this product).
Estée Lauder Tinted Moisturizer: Perfect for work rather than foundation.
Bobbi Brown Concealer: For hiding sleepiness.
Laura Mercier Mineral Powder
NARS Blush: For adding color, creating the illusion of cheekbones, and it stays on all day long.
Anastasia Brow Kit: This will change your life (or at least your face). Trust me.
Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara: Because It. Is. The. Best. Ever.
Chanel Eyeliner in Black Shimmer or Espresso: Just a little on the top lashes.
Jo Malone Cologne: Because smelling good is nice. And it’s not too offensive to sensitive noses. My favorites are Orange Blossom, Vanilla Anise, and Blue Agava & Cacao.
Burt’s Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm: For just a hint of color.
I am always curious about people’s morning routines (it’s the occupational therapist in me). How long does it take you to get ready and how much makeup do you think is work appropriate?

It takes me ~30 minutes to get ready in the morning (I shower at night). Also, I share a few of your favorite things in my morning makeup routine! The lip balm, brow kit, eyeliner, mascara, blush and concealer. I use a compact powder (Clinique) as my base and it lasts all day (I would not leave home without it). Les, I must agree with you the brow kit is THE BEST EVER. I work in pediatrics (outpatient setting) and a little makeup can go a long way. I think when you take care of yourself it reflects positively on the people you meet and work with.

I think we adopted a lot of the same rituals after being roomies for so long!
